Overland Travel (2023)

Project Details

  • In Development
  • Platform: Digital
  • System: Dungeons and Dragons 5e
PDF

A system overhaul for travel in 5e Dungeons and Dragons which focuses on simplifying logistics, preparation, and placing players in an active role. Overland Travel provides revised rules for pacing, rations, fatigue, and random encounters. The system uses a combination of the player's strengths, playing cards, and pre-generated encounters to provide a dramatic but plausible experience. The system additionally provides an example Encounter region complete with exploration, social, and combat encounters (including a custom boss monster).

Doctor Class

The Doctor is a, non-magical utility and healing class for 5e Dungeons and Dragons. After looking for unofficial alternatives and being unhappy with community designs, I endeavored to create a testament to inspiration such as the character "Croaker" from Glen Cook's The Black Company and Gothic works like Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.

Dust Deposit Mines

Dust Deposit Mines is a oneshot adventure for 5e Dungeons and Dragons. The adventure focuses on exploration and skill challenges as players transport a wagon of supplies to a nearby mine. Balanced for characters from 1st to 6th level but still potentially fun for higher level parties.

About Me

Hi I'm James, a game designer from. From my earliest memories, I have always been captivated with video games and the unique experiences they can convey. My favorite games have been those which pull the user in with thematic mechanics like Spiderman, Bioshock Infinite, League of Legends and D&d.

I'm currently working at Iron Galaxy Studios on AAA live-service strategy game. Working as an embedded designer in my client companies' live balance team, I've been able to apply my past esports and UX experience to help bring improvements to millions of players at all skill levels. In collaboration with the visuals team, I've led the design of UI features that help improve the new player experience by providing accessible strategic recommendations.

My desire to design new and innovative experiences led me to study media and game design at Michigan State University. There I pursued a variety of opportunities: starting a new club focused on tabletop games, filling multiple roles in collegiate esports, and gaining a love for scuba diving. I decided to pursue a Master's degree in interactive media with a focus on serious games and accessible design through MSU's linked degree program.

I have a strong commitment to quality learned from my experience working as a software developer in the automotive and market research industries. I love collaboration and creating closely with artists and programmers. I joined MSU's Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab and contributed to the development of educational games for the Detroit Science Gallery and NSCL. Recently, I ran a successful Kickstarter campaign which received over 5x it's initial funding goal. I led the production and design of the project to publishing in both digital and print formats.

When I'm not tinkering away, you can find me out searching for new experiences. Whether hiking, scuba diving, or finding some weird and unknown place in my local area, I love exploring and discovering inspiration in unconventional places.

About Me

Hi I'm James, a game designer from Orlando, Florida. From my earliest memories, I have always been captivated with video games and the unique experiences they can convey. My favorite games have been those which pull the user in with thematic mechanics like Spiderman, Cyberpunk 2077, League of Legends, and Dungeons and Dragons. I believe great games are an active conversation between the player and developer.

I've spent the last year at Iron Galaxy Studios on AAA live-service strategy game for 3 major seasonal releases. Working as an embedded designer in my client companies' live balance team, I've been able to apply my past esports and UX experience to help bring improvements to millions of players at all skill levels. In collaboration with the visuals team, I've led the design of UI features that help improve the new player experience by providing accessible strategic recommendations.

I love Tabletop Roleplaying games because of how they allow players to embody new experiences and avatars with almost absolute freedom. I love Dungeons and Dragons because it's popularity makes it a perfect sandbox to create new mechanics and subvert player expectations. I decided to pursue a Master's degree Michigan State University in Interactive Media with a focus on serious games and accessibility design to learn how to create games everyone can enjoy.

When I'm not tinkering away, you can find me out searching for new experiences. Whether hiking, scuba diving, or finding some weird, unknown place in my local area, I love exploring and discovering inspiration in unconventional places.
